In 1974, President Richard Nixon tried to convince Richardson to run as a Republican for the U.S. House of represenatives in South Carolina's 5th Congressional district. Later, a private poll indicated he would have been the favorite had he run.. Two years later, President Gerald Ford convinced Richardson to resign from his coaching position at the University of South Carolina to run for the seat. Richardson lost to incumbent Democrat Kenneth Holland by a narrow margin. Holland was aided by the strength of Jimmy Carter's winning campaign in South Carolina to hold off Richardson by a tally of 66,073 (51.4%) to 62,095 (48.3%). His campaign was supported by former baseball players Joe DiMaggio,, Ted Williams, Bob Feller, and Wilmer "Vinegar Bend" Mizell among others. The
