Goose Gossage Signed ML Baseball "Pine Tar Game "7/24/83" & "F*** George Brett"
Rawlings Official Major League Baseball. Hand-signed and inscribed by Goose Gossage (New York Yankees, HOF).
What Happened During the Incident
- The Home Run: In the top of the 9th inning at Yankee Stadium with two outs, Brett hit a two-run homer off Goose Gossage to put the Royals up 5–4.
- The Protest: Billy Martin emerged from the dugout to claim the pine tar on Brett's bat extended past the allowed 18-inch limit from the handle.
- The Call & Ejection: Umpires measured the bat against home plate and called Brett out, prompting an explosive, iconic sprint from the dugout by Brett as teammates restrained him.
- The Protest Ruling: Royals management protested to American League President Lee MacPhail, who overturned the ruling that the game should be decided on the field rather than by a technicality.
- The Reversal and Completion:
- The Resumption: The game resumed about a month later on August 18, 1983, lasting just four more outs before the Royals officially sealed a 5–4 win.
